A wonderfully decorative antique Chinese lacquer box, hand-painted in polychrome with a chinoiserie scene of robed figures at leisure in a garden landscape — pine trees, rockwork, and a flying crane rendered in gilt, red, cream, and soft blue against a glossy black ground. The lid and sides continue the narrative scene, while the front is fitted with a scalloped brass "moon lock" plate and matching brass hinges at the back. The interior is lined in black lacquer paper throughout.
This is a wonderful example of the export lacquerware once made for the Western trade — full of storytelling detail and rich in patina from age. It would be lovely as a jewelry or trinket box, a catchall on a console or bar cart, or simply displayed as a decorative object on a stack of books or a shelf.
